Cooling time 1 hour
Servings 44 cookies

Ingredients

  • 100 g butter room warm
  • 1 egg
  • 90 g sugar**
  • orange zest from 1 orange
  • 40 ml freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 8 g baking powder**
  • approx. 260 g flour**

for rolling

  • approx. 20 g powdered sugar
  • approx. 30 g sugar**

Instructions

  • Mix orange zest and sugar.
  • Add softened butter and mix.
  • Add orange juice, egg and salt and mix again.
  • Add flour with baking powder a little at a time and mix to make a very sticky dough. Cover the dough and chill it for 1 hour. It's best to use a little less flour at first so your dough doesn't get too firm, and add some more as needed. (Also note tips and tricks for making these orange cookies at the top of the post).
  • Shape the dough into small balls (about the size of walnuts), roll each ball first in sugar, then in powdered sugar, and spread the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving enough space between them.
  • Bake the balls in a preheated oven at 180 °C top and bottom heat for approx. 10 minutes. During baking, the balls turn into cookies.

Notes

  • Use only freshly squeezed orange juice for the recipe, so that the orange cookies become really aromatic.
  • Use organic oranges for the orange zest.
  • You can adjust the amount of sugar for the dough to taste.
  • Use a little less flour at first and add more as needed if the dough is too mushy. It should not be too firm, but very sticky.
  • Do not stir the dough too long, but only briefly until a homogeneous consistency, so that the cookies later taste fluffy.
  • Do not bake the orange cookies longer than necessary. It is normal if they look pale after baking.
