How to make mulled wine – 3 delicious recipes for Christmas drink

How is mulled wine made?

Mulled wine is made from red wine, white wine or, if it is to be alcohol-free, from juice. The wine or the juice is flavored with various spices, such as cinnamon, cloves, star anise. In addition, citrus fruits are added as desired for a fruity taste. Mulled wine is sweetened with sugar or a sugar alternative, for example, honey, maple syrup. The quality of homemade mulled wine depends largely on the quality of the red or white wine used for homemade mulled wine.

To make mulled wine yourself, you need red or white wine, Christmas spices (preferably whole), possibly citrus fruits, such as orange or lemon, a sweetener, for example honey, sugar, maple syrup, and some water.

And here’s how easy it is to make it yourself:

  1. The spices are boiled briefly in water, then left to infuse for about 10 minutes so that they can develop their full aroma.
  2. Depending on taste, fruit cut into pieces is added. With a potato masher you can squeeze some juice out of the fruit.
  3. Then honey or sugar is added, as well as wine, everything is stirred and heated. It is important not to boil the wine.
  4. Then let the mulled wine steep for about 10 minutes, pour it through a sieve and enjoy. Before serving, you can heat it when it is no longer hot.
