Healthy snack to nibble

These sugar free baby cookies are an ideal snack for the little ones. You can give them to your baby from about 7 – 9 months, respectively when he already eats his first finger food well.

By the way, the cookies are also good for toddlers and older children.

In addition, with this recipe you conjure up the first Christmas cookies for your little ones.

Since the cookies taste naturally sweet thanks to banana, just like my vegan banana muffins, they are sure to please adults as well. So you can snack healthy together with your child.

Why make baby cookies yourself?

In order for your baby to grow into healthy eating, you should offer him delicious snacks without sugar and additives. Because at that age it develops its taste.

The baby cookies from the supermarket often contain hidden sugar or ingredients that are rather unhealthy for babies.

If you make baby cookies yourself, you know what ingredients are in them. This way you can avoid unnecessary additives. In addition, you can rely on healthy ingredients in organic quality.

Sugar free baby cookies – with banana or apple puree

With my recipe you can make sugar free baby cookies either with banana or with apple puree. The first time, it’s best to prepare both versions and offer them to your child. This way you can test which cookies your child likes best.

The cookies with banana taste a little sweeter than those with apple puree. They are also very aromatic. Even while baking, they spread the scent of banana in the kitchen.

I think adults like more the cookies with banana. At least that was the case with us. And the baby liked both varieties.

Which banana, which apple puree?

For the baby cookies recipe you need very ripe bananas, just like for my chocolate banana bread or my banana muffins. They need to have brown spots or be completely brown.

Green or yellow bananas are not suitable for the recipe. They just have a different texture than overripe bananas.

As for apple puree, you should take some without sugar for the recipe. It should consist of apples only. You can either make it yourself or buy it.

It’s best to study the ingredient list on the package before you buy the apple puree. Also, opt for the organic apple puree** from the supermarket. I used German Alnatura apple puree in the recipe, just as I did for my vegan applesauce cake.

Which flour for baby cookies?

For the baby cookies you should use wholemeal flour. But it should be finely milled without wholemeal scrap.

I used whole wheat flour for the recipe. I also used it to make my whole wheat bread.

But you can also use whole spelt flour or whole rye flour instead. Ground whole oat flakes are just as good for this.

You can also make the baby cookies with a mixture of different wholemeal flours.

What vegetable oil to use in the recipe?

Vegetable oils that are neutral in taste and odor are good for babies. Rapeseed oil is the best choice here. On the other hand, you should avoid olive oil.

It is better to use organic rapeseed oil to make the baby cookies. Also, buy the vegetable oil in a glass bottle to avoid pollutants from a plastic bottle as much as possible.

By the way, I also made my vegan nut cake and vegan lemon cake with rapeseed oil. The two cakes are not suitable for babies. But maybe you’ve already tried them yourself.

How to shape cookies with banana or apple?

I gave the cookies an elongated, narrow, oval shape. This way, baby can comfortably hold the cookie by one end with his hand, and the other end fits perfectly in his little mouth.

Of course, depending on your baby’s preferences and age, you can shape the cookies differently. For example, make round bite-sized cookies out of the dough.

How to store and freeze baby cookies?

Store the baby cookies in an airtight container, such as a lunch box or cookie tin**. You can store them for several days at room temperature, but in a place that is not too warm.

You can freeze the remaining cookies for several months. Then thaw individual cookies as needed for the baby. For example, you can let them thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
